Osteopathy is a system of healthcare built on an understanding of the body’s structure and the function of the various parts. Osteopaths believe that misalignment in skeletal structure can lead to disease. Therefore, we improve the body’s mechanics to promote overall health as well as dealing with the presenting complaint.
The body can heal itself. This is a central tenet of osteopathy. The osteopath’s role is to remove obstacles to healing.
Osteopaths use physical treatment, these include manipulation, articulation of joints and deep soft tissue massage. Most people visit osteopaths for back and neck pain but we treat all parts of the body. (It is usually necessary for the patient to undress to their underwear for evaluation and treatment).
You do not need to be referred by your GP, as the osteopath will take a full medical history at your first visit. If your complaint cannot best be dealt with by osteopathic treatment, the osteopath will refer you on to a more suitable practitioner.
All osteopaths in the UK are registered with The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Their website lists all the osteopaths in the UK by name and by area. www.osteopathy.org.uk
